A wildlife rescue in San Francisco is trying to figure out how a marmot, a mountain-dwelling rodent about the size of a house cat, ended up sick in a city backyard, and the leading theory involves antifreeze and a long car ride. Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue recovered the animal earlier this week from a backyard in the Mission District, one of San Francisco's oldest neighborhoods. Marmots live at high elevations in the Sierra Nevada, not in urban backyards. The rescue's founder, Lila Travis, told KQED the animal had likely crawled under a car somewhere in the mountains and hitched an involuntary ride to the city. Lynnette Bellin was on her regular Sunday swim in Lake Tahoe when something seized her leg and pulled her beneath the surface. She thought at first it was a person, the force was that strong. Then she felt teeth and claws, and a five-minute fight for her life began. Bellin, a certified Infant Swimming Resource instructor who teaches children self-rescue techniques, was swimming close to shore to avoid boat traffic when the animal struck. The deaths follow nine people dying in a Feb. 17 avalanche near Castle Peak, along with other fatalities at ski resorts such as Heavenly, a mountain in California's side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Nevada County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that six skiers in a group of 16 have survived the avalanche and are waiting to be rescued, but 10 of the skiers are still missing. The group consisted of four ski guides with 12 clients.
