(Win McNamee/Getty Images) During the recent Trump–Xi summit in Washington, there was something of an awkward silence over Taiwan. That’s probably for the best. The issue did not need to be talked about, because Taiwan is what an international lawyer might call “settled diplomacy.” The genius of the longstanding diplomatic arrangement is that it does not resolve the Taiwan question. He called his appointment “an Isaiah moment,” quoting Isaiah 6:8: “Here am I, send me.” He described his diplomatic post as “something engineered in heaven.” A few weeks later, on September 18, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth went to Texas A&M University to launch the Pentagon’s “Send Me Tour.” In a speech the next day, he cited the same verse from Isaiah to frame American military service as a divine…Open
A "Chinese foreign agent" was arrested by FBI agents Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport as she prepared to board a flight for Shanghai, China. According to a criminal complaint filed by a member of the FBI's counterintelligence squad on Saturday, Wanying "Heather" Zhang, 34, of Irvine, surveilled Ting-Yu Lai, the son of Taiwanese President Ching-Te Lai, at the direction of Chinese officials. Zhang is charged with acting as an unregistered agent of the People's Republic of China.
