Newly released air traffic control recordings reveal the chilling seconds between a routine takeoff clearance at Chandler Municipal Airport and the moment a fellow pilot radioed the tower to report the plane had gone down, killing the sole person on board. The Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee departed runway 22 right on a Tuesday evening just after 9:30 p.m. local time. Moments later, the aircraft slammed into a commercial yard southwest of the airport in Chandler, Arizona, and the pilot, the only occupant, did not survive. Authorities have not released the pilot's name or gender. The ATC audio, obtained by 12News , lays out a sequence that moved from ordinary to catastrophic in under a minute.
