President Donald Trump on Tuesday issued an endorsement in the Texas Senate primary, backing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over Republican incumbent John Cornyn.
President Trump has endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the Texas GOP runoff for U.S. Senate, one week before voting ends in the contentious and expensive primary.
The president faced pressure from his base to endorse the state’s attorney general, Ken Paxton. But advisers had urged him to support Sen. John Cornyn, arguing that Paxton has too much baggage.
“We were doing a live special on Showtime, no commercial breaks, and as the results started to come in, it became clear that we’d planned for a different outcome.”
