After discontent from the cattle industry and many Republican allies, the latest move to help both ranchers and consumers is a shock to the entrenched ag system.
Ranchers who spoke with the DCNF said smaller processors face significant challenges competing with major meatpackers, including economies of scale, federal inspection requirements, labor shortages and distribution costs, raising questions about how much Trump’s proposal could actually change the economics of the cattle industry.
