CNN gained rare access inside Israeli-occupied south Lebanon, where predominantly Shia Muslim towns and homes have been reduced to rubble. Three Christian villages have been spared Israel's demolition policy, but their residents are cut off from the rest of the country. The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) is trying to regain control over southern Lebanon through a US-backed framework meant to transition control of Lebanese territory currently occupied by Israeli forces — known as "pilot zones." The recent capture of a strategic ridge has further entrenched the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory, as efforts to broker lasting peace have floundered.
The Lebanese Army is working to decommission weapons from militant groups like Hezbollah and clear southern Lebanon of unexploded ordnance under a US-led framework agreement between Israel and Lebanon. The mission is taking place in "pilot zones," small pockets of territory previously under Israeli military control. But the mission comes with serious challenges and risks: persistent Israeli airstrikes and unexploded ordnance. CNN's Jeremy Diamond reports on the Lebanese Army unit handling this dangerous mission.
