he bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church 63 years ago this week shocked the country and proved to be a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. Founded in 1873, it was the city’s first Black church. It became so central to the community it was known at the time simply as “Everybody’s Church.” People returned this week to the church not just to preserve what happened there, but to give people a place to reflect on what it means for them now.
