Just over an hour before the scheduled lethal injection took place, a federal appeals court issued a temporary stay. Pike was 18 when she and her then-boyfriend tortured and murdered 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in 1995. She was convicted and sentenced to death, while her boyfriend, who was 17 at the time, received a life sentence with the possibility of parole. The call comes as Pike's legal team argues that the court never considered her past of severe mental illness and trauma stemming from childhood sexual abuse.
