The United States Geological Survey reported that Episode 51 began at 8:30 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time. Within minutes, lava fountain heights jumped to 950 feet while molten rock spread at roughly 400 cubic yards per second, a staggering volume pouring from the volcano's summit.
