According to a source with direct knowledge of the conversation, the senator was told the texts were "unvetted," but he used them anyway. Schmitt accused Smith of attending an Atlanta Hawks basketball game in February 2024, suggesting he was in Georgia to collude with the Fulton County district attorney who was investigating Donald Trump separately. It turns out Smith was at an Iowa Hawkeyes game, not a Hawks game.
