NYTIMES (David Ovalle) - A Highly Coveted Catch in the Florida Keys Isn’t a Fish. It’s Cocaine.

Bricks of the drug frequently surface in the waters off the island chain. Despite the risks, some who discover “square grouper,” as they’re known, hang onto them.

What is the current risk to human swimmers regarding shark attacks off the Massachusetts coast?
The risk to swimmers remains exceptionally low. The state's last fatal shark bite occurred in 2018, which was its first in 82 years. Despite the rising conflict with the fishing industry, conservationists remain concerned that the frustration from fishermen could lead to pressure on existing protections for the sharks.

What are the physical characteristics and behaviors of the great white sharks involved in these depredation incidents?
The sharks involved in these thefts are usually juveniles under 10 feet long. Full-sized great whites can reach lengths of 15 to 20 feet, weigh well over a ton, and can hit bursts of speed near 35 mph. They are currently listed as a vulnerable species. The juvenile sharks find a fish already hooked and thrashing to be an easier meal than a full-grown grey seal, which can top 10 feet and 800 pounds.

What role did the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act play in the current situation involving great white sharks off the Massachusetts coast?
The 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act barred the hunting of grey seals, leading to a herd growth of an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 seals along the Cape Cod coastline. Because these seals provide bait in the water, they have contributed to the recovery of the North Atlantic white shark population. While the recovery of the shark species is a conservation success, it has created conflict for working boats that share the same grounds and lose catch and gear to the sharks.

What is "shark depredation" and how is it affecting the local fishing industry in Cape Cod?
Shark depredation is the behavior where a shark takes a hooked fish before the angler can bring it into the boat. Local charter captains in Cape Cod report that these thefts have been rising over the last three years, causing financial losses for fishermen. For example, local captain Hap Farrell reported at least 50 depredation incidents in one recent summer, noting that crews often haul back only the head of the fish while sharks come within four or five feet of the boat to chase what remains.

What specific event did National Geographic photographer Brian Skerry capture on June 29 off the coast of Cape Cod?
Brian Skerry captured the first underwater video of a juvenile female great white shark racing up from the depths to snatch a hooked fish off a line before an angler could boat it. Skerry described the event as happening so suddenly that it took less than a second for the shark to rocket through and take the fish.

What are the concerns of local charter captains regarding the presence of great white sharks off Cape Cod?
Local charter captains are concerned about the economic impact of shark depredation, which includes the loss of catch, the destruction of fishing gear, and the potential for scaring off paying clients. They report that fish are being hauled in already mauled, and they express worry that a hooked fish—which represents their income—is being treated as "free lunch" by the sharks.

How did photographer Brian Skerry manage to capture underwater footage of a great white shark stealing a fish off a line?
Brian Skerry, a Massachusetts native working with National Geographic, captured the footage with the help of local charter boat captains. They fixed a small camera to a bridle and the fishing lure, which allowed the camera to capture the shark's movements and the moment it took the fish from the hook.

What specific event did National Geographic crews capture off the Massachusetts coast in June involving a juvenile great white shark?
National Geographic crews captured rare underwater footage of a young female great white shark performing "depredation," which is the act of a shark stealing a fish that is already hooked on a fishing line. The footage, captured by explorer and photographer Brian Skerry, showed the shark grabbing the fish "like a loaf of bread" while deliberately avoiding the lure to prevent getting hooked itself.
