Tadaryl Shipp, Christa Pike's ex who helped kill a classmate in a satanic Knoxville murder, could walk free in five years after her botched execution. Tadaryl Shipp is back on the parole clock. The 49-year-old accomplice in the 1995 torture killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer was denied at his first hearing in October 2025, and Tennessee has set his next date for October 2031. That five-year window arrives as attention returns to his former girlfriend, death-row inmate Christa Pike, after two lethal injection doses failed to kill her and left her hospitalized in critical condition. Fox News reported the latest status of both cases and the crime that still follows investigators three decades later. Shipp is serving life for first-degree murder plus 25 years for conspiracy at Tennessee’s Northwest Correctional Complex. He was 17 at the time of the killing and therefore not eligible for a death sentence. Pike was convicted and sentenced to die. Knoxville’s crime scene still shocks a veteran chief Former Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith spent nearly 34 years on the force. He told Fox News Digital the Slemmer murder stood apart even in that long career. Keith described what officers found in plain terms. "It was a grotesque crime scene," He went further on the damage left behind. "It was one of the worst crime scenes I'd witnessed. and I was with the police department almost 34 years." Slemmer, Pike, and Shipp were classmates at a vocational school. Prosecutors said Shipp held Slemmer down when she tried to escape and carved pentagrams into her chest and face. Pike was convicted of slashing her dozens of times and crushing her head with a chunk of asphalt. She kept a skull fragment as a trophy and showed it to another classmate before her arrest. A third suspect, Shadolla Peterson, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact and testified against Pike and Shipp. Satanic symbols followed the pair from dorm room to arrest Court documents said Shipp had explored satanism as a child. Investigators found satanic paraphernalia in his dorm room. He and Pike were said to be wearing pentagram pendants when they were arrested. Keith said Shipp showed no remorse after the arrest and even fell asleep during his interrogation. University of Tennessee forensic anthropologist Dr. Murray Marks testified on March 25, 1996, in Knox County Criminal Court about the wounds to Slemmer’s skull during Pike’s murder trial. Tennessee prison records later show Shipp adopted the alias Abdul Khalip. In 2016 he filed an unsuccessful federal lawsuit seeking access to halal food and Islamic prayer oils behind bars. A June 2024 Tennessee Department of Correction mugshot shows him with glasses and a salt-and-pepper beard. Failed doses leave Pike hospitalized as Shipp’s clock resets Pike remains on death row after the failed lethal injection. Two doses did not kill her. Witnesses were asked to leave the room before she was declared dead. Emergency vehicles later arrived at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. She has remained hospitalized in critical condition and had requested an alternate means of execution. She appeared remotely from Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation for a hearing in Knox County Criminal Court as the case drew fresh notice. Shipp’s path is different. Because of his age at the time of the crime, the state could not seek death. Life plus a conspiracy term still put him inside for decades. Now the parole board has already given him one hearing and scheduled another for October 2031. That is the system Tennessee is running: a killer who helped carve pentagrams into a 19-year-old classmate, fell asleep in interrogation, and collected a life sentence gets another formal shot at release five years from his first denial. The woman who crushed the victim’s skull with asphalt survived the state’s attempt to carry out her sentence and sits in a hospital bed. Colleen Slemmer never got a second chance. Her killers keep getting process. Justice that keeps reopening the door for the worst offenders tells victims’ families exactly where they stand.
