Smith of Germantown, Tennessee, pulled a 2.29-carat yellow diamond out of the dirt at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, a find so striking that the park's own facility supervisor said he was "dumbfounded." Smith made the discovery on August 16 while on a family outing with his wife and two granddaughters, Sage and Juniper. The group rented a wagon and a basic search kit from the park, headed to the East Drain section of the 37-acre diamond field, and started sifting.
