Photo by CNN via Getty Images On September 11, 2001, al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four planes. Two of these were flown into the Twin Towers, one into the Pentagon, and the fourth—en route to Washington, D.C.—crashed in a Pennsylvania field after its passengers heroically overpowered the hijackers. All told, 2,977 Americans were killed on that day. Shortly thereafter, the Bush administration would launch the invasion of Afghanistan and begin laying…Open

Photo by EMILY KASK/AFP via Getty Images In the early hours of January 1, 2025, as revelers celebrated the arrival of the new year in New Orleans’ French Quarter, an American-born citizen from Texas conducted a vehicle-ramming attack (VRA ) along the city’s iconic Bourbon Street.  Forty-two-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a veteran of the U.S. Army, sped a Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck down the pedestrian-packed street, killing 14 people and injuring more…Open

THEAMERICANCONSERVATIVE (Geoffrey Aronson) - How Lebanon Continues to Confound the U.S.

The new U.S.-brokered memorandum of understanding between Israel and Lebanon has the weaknesses of its predecessors. The post How Lebanon Continues to Confound the U.S. appeared first on The American Conservative .

Foreign Affairs How Lebanon Continues to Confound the U.S. The new U.S.-brokered memorandum of understanding between Israel and Lebanon has the weaknesses of its predecessors. The recent memorandum of understanding between Israel and Lebanon is not the first time the U.S. has placed itself at the center of Lebanese affairs. Serial interventions, both military and diplomatic, have been undertaken by Democrats and Republicans alike in Washington over close to a century. These efforts attest to Lebanon’s outsized ability to engage Washington at the highest level, and highlight the at best limited, short-term effectiveness of that…Open

(Photo by Michael Ciaglo/Getty Images) Last week, far-left Democrat Melat Kiros won her Denver, Colorado, U.S. House primary against 15-term incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette, making the 29-year-old the latest in a slew of democratic socialists to have defeated establishment Democrats in this midterm election cycle. In Kiros’s race and the others, almost all of the Democrats involved have been considered progressive, but the older, incumbent guard still hews closely to the party…Open

Foreign Affairs As Israel Ethnically Cleanses Southern Lebanon, Americans Suffer Blowback U.S. critics of Mideast wars have warned they can lead to terror at home. A would-be mass casualty attack last week at a Michigan synagogue was narrowly averted after an assailant, Ayman Ghazali, rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the building in what authorities are treating as a targeted act of terror. No worshippers were killed, and security personnel stopped the attacker before he could carry out what could have been a massacre.  Within minutes of the attack—before the public knew anything meaningful about the suspect or his…Open

THEAMERICANCONSERVATIVE (Rob York) - Iran and the ‘Phil Leotardo Doctrine’

Decapitating and moving on is sometimes easier said than done. The post Iran and the ‘Phil Leotardo Doctrine’ appeared first on The American Conservative .

Foreign Affairs Iran and the ‘Phil Leotardo Doctrine’ Decapitating and moving on is sometimes easier said than done. All successful political movements build coalitions, so in 2008 and 2012, when the Republican Party was still dominated by views associated with regime change and nation-building, the Ron Paul campaign pitched its antiwar message from several angles.  For the bleeding hearts, the Texas congressman and his surrogates could pitch you on the suffering caused by the “shock and awe” of the 2003 Iraq invasion and the Obama administration’s drone strikes . If you were interested in the strategic…Open
