The alarm at the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, a coastal town near Nice in southern France, sounded at 5:48 a.m. on a Tuesday morning. Municipal police reached the scene five minutes later, at 5:53 a.m. By then, the thieves had already cut through wire fencing around the grounds, entered the museum, and removed four paintings from their frames using an electric knife and a metal saw.
