Some 40,000 migrants crossed into Spain's enclave of Ceuta on July 30 alone, according to the Spanish newspaper El País. Ceuta is a Spanish outpost of just under 12 square miles on the North African coast, bounded on land by Morocco and separated from mainland Spain by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar.
