California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new law meant to prevent federal efforts to ensure election integrity. Senate Bill 73, written by Democratic state Senators Sabrina Cervantes and Tom Umberg, immediately blocks anyone — including federal agents — from accessing voter rolls or election technology without a court order. It also limits law enforcement contact with election workers unless there is a public safety emergency and makes it a crime to knowingly remove voted ballots from election officials’ custody.
