The U.S. plans to roll out a system by December that automatically registers young men for the military draft, a policy signed into law by President Trump last year.
For decades, draft-eligible men ages 18 to 25 have been required to register with the Selective Service System. Most states offer a registration option on driver’s license applications.
Automatic registration is expected to begin later this year - but are there exceptions?
The U.S. has not had a draft since the Vietnam War, with military service being voluntary since 1973.
The new rule will register men automatically rather than require them to register themselves within 30 days of their 18th birthdays.
The new career field is expected to be in place by Oct. 1 and notifications of selection board results are expected in the summer.
