A struggling lesbian bar in a small Massachusetts town dropped its mask mandate for a single night each week to stay afloat, and its own community responded with accusations of ableism, boycott threats, and a demand that the owner apologize for crying. Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue in Greenfield, Massachusetts, announced in August that Saturday nights would go mask-optional. The bar had kept a mask requirement in place years after state and local governments lifted theirs, and more than a year after the federal government declared the COVID-19 pandemic over in 2023.
