Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, denied Tuesday that Iran has “kamikaze dolphins.” But Hegseth did not rule out that the U.S. military has them. The U.S. Navy, in fact, does have a Marine Mammal Program that trains bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions to “detect, locate, mark and recover objects” in harbors, coastal areas and at depth in the open sea. The Navy has trained dolphins and sea lions since 1959, with the Marine Mammal Program homeported at Naval Base Point Loma since the 1960s. The Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific’s Reconnaissance and Interdiction Division manages the program. #straitofhormuz #hegseth #iran
