The Houthis have, in recent years, attempted blockades of the Red Sea, to considerable success. The Iran-backed group has also conducted strikes on Israel and clashed with the U.S. Navy.
We are learning more this week after U.S. Central Command said that its forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers. This comes as Middle East tensions intensified on Tuesday with Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen launching strikes on several Saudi cities. Reports indicate that the Houthis attacked four cities in the south of Saudi Arabia where at least 73 people were wounded. The latest escalation threatens to drag Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthi militia back into a full-blown war.
The Houthi-run news agency in Yemen said the militia would issue a statement about a “large-scale” military operation in Saudi Arabia.
