More than 160 Haitians landed in Cap-Haitien on Thursday after a U.S. deportation flight, the first since the Trump administration won its legal fight to end Temporary Protected Status for roughly 350,000 people. The plane touched down in northern Haiti because Port-au-Prince, the capital, is too dangerous. Gangs control an estimated 70 percent of the city. The U.S. government has banned commercial flights there through early September. So the 161 deportees stepped off in Cap-Haitien, where Haitian immigration officials handed each one a maximum of $65, some food, and a drink.
