Mika reflects on the weeks she spent covering the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 that left nearly 3,000 people dead. On Morning Joe, she recalls empty stretchers “because there was nobody to save” and, on that September morning, she says “it all turned so dark, so quickly.”
At an event Tuesday honoring 9/11 first responders, President Donald Trump claimed two firefighters carried him to safety when a nearby appeared unstable. For years, Trump has made similar claims that he was at Ground Zero on 9/11, but there is no evidence to support his account that firefighters carried him from the site. “What in the world?” Mika asks on Morning Joe. The Bulwark’s Sam Stein calls the comments “blasphemous” and “demeaning to the people who were there.”
Joshua Aviles, a sailor aboard the USS Lincoln, said his father, Luis Manuel Aviles, was detained by immigration authorities in Florida during a vehicle stop. Aviles claims his father has a work permit, driver’s license and Social Security card. Mika calls attention to the incident and condemns the “violence and fear” she says is being deployed against the country’s immigrant population.
