A wildfire so large it has begun producing its own winds and lightning is advancing on the French city of Bordeaux, displacing more than 250,000 people and stretching emergency services across southern Europe to their limits. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned that the main blaze in the Gironde region of southwestern France had become "extremely intense and unpredictable," generating its own weather patterns and "advancing erratically toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area." The fire front stretches more than 20 kilometers, roughly 12 miles, and had burned through 98,000 hectares by Sunday evening, an area larger than many mid-sized American counties.
