The department said borrowers who are already enrolled in an auto repayment plan do not need to take any further action and will automatically see their interest rates lowered by one percent beginning July 1.
New rules mean that parent PLUS loans have to be consolidated into a new loan by June 30 for parents to keep affordable payments. But the deadline is really earlier to allow time for processing.
The Department of Education said 7.5 million borrowers are still enrolled in the program, but they must all enroll in an alternative repayment plan by Sept. 29.
