Researchers in Roskilde, Denmark, have uncovered the remains of a 13th-century convent hidden six feet beneath a local soccer field, a structure believed lost since the Protestant Reformation demolished it nearly five centuries ago. The discovery came this summer after local officials began preparatory work on a parking facility for the field. Before breaking ground, crews ran a Ground Penetrating Radar survey, a system that sends electromagnetic waves into the earth and reads the reflections that bounce back from buried structures. What came back stunned the researchers watching the monitors: clear, detailed images of St. Clare's Convent, a monastery dating to 1256, sitting largely intact beneath the turf.
