The now-passed spending package includes a 2-week continuing resolution to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Democrats are seeking to rein in the agency after two U.S. citizens were shot and killed in Minnesota last month at the hands of federal immigration enforcement officials.

The U.S. House on Tuesday passed a spending package totaling more than $1 trillion, ending the partial government shutdown which had begun on Saturday. The package passed as part of a deal to avoid a broader government shutdown. Under the package, the government’s largest departments, such as the Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Defense, will be funded through the end of the fiscal year in September. But the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration enforcement, is only funded through February 13 . A total of 42 House lawmakers broke with their parties, with 21 Republicans voting against the spending package and 21 Democrats voting in favor. The funding package, which passed the Senate last week, passed in a 217-214 split.

Conservative members were not happy with the Senate breaking up the funding package and only temporarily funding DHS. Democrats have raised concerns over the Trump administration’s tactics while implementing President Trump’s crackdown on immigration, primarily in Minnesota after two U.S. citizens were fatally shot by federal agents last month.
