California Democrat Rep. Aisha Wahab was officially sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday, filling the vacancy left by former Rep. Eric Swalwell, who resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Liaisons dangereuses: Swalwell admitted to an intimate relationship with a suspected Chinese spy, while he still sat on the House Intelligence Committee. The FBI had warned Democratic leadership about the risks years before he was removed from the seat.
The newly declassified investigation files also show that the FBI had initially tried to recruit the infamous Fang Fang as a source that could share information on Chinese influence operations targeting public officials in the United States.
Eric Swalwell resigned in April as he faced sexual assault allegations, prompting a special election to fill out his term. Two Democrats topped the field in a regular primary election this month.
