True Value Hardware, a company rooted in Illinois since 1948, is relocating its headquarters to Fort Wayne, Indiana, after filing for bankruptcy in 2024 and being acquired by rival Do It Best. The move cost Illinois hundreds of headquarters jobs and the tax revenue that came with them. The company cited long-term stability and a need for a more business-friendly environment, a polite way of saying Springfield's tax-and-regulate approach finally drove out a firm that had stayed put for more than seven decades.
