The Iran War Hormuz and the Looming Economic Catastrophe The Trump administration is missing the bigger picture. Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images In the classic martial arts film Enter the Dragon , Bruce Lee’s character is instructing a young, aspiring fighter. Irritated at the lack of progress his student is making, he points to the sky. “It’s like a finger pointing away to the moon,” he says as the student tries to focus on what his teacher is saying. “Don’t concentrate on the finger,” Lee says, slapping him on the head, “or you will miss all that heavenly glory.” The quote is derived from an old Buddhist text called the Śūraṅgama Sūtra, and the point is clear: Sometimes if you focus on what is immediately in…Open
What is the author's critique of the Trump administration's focus on the Strait of Hormuz in the context of the Iran War?
The author argues that the administration is "missing the bigger picture" by fixating on the Strait of Hormuz as a decisive battlefield. Using a martial arts analogy, the author claims the Strait is merely the "finger" pointing at the "moon," which is Iran's actual goal: a long-term strategy to demolish the American economy and financial system through economic pressure rather than just a maritime skirmish.

What actions has the Trump administration considered regarding diesel to address potential shortages in the American logistics chain?
Due to the diesel market crisis, President Donald Trump floated the prospect of banning diesel exports to ensure there are no domestic shortages. While he has walked back the ban for now after strong-arming Europeans to dump their oil and diesel reserves, the article suggests the option may return if the crisis worsens.

What specific impacts on the American "real economy" are mentioned as a result of the pressures on global energy and commodity markets?
The article cites several specific economic pressures: American heating-oil bills are expected to rise by 21 percent this winter, diesel markets are entering a crisis that threatens the American logistics chain (trains and trucks), and food prices—specifically sugar—are rising. These factors are contributing to falling consumer confidence, lower housing affordability, and reduced foreign interest in U.S. Treasuries.

How has the volatility in the U.S. Treasury debt market been described, and what are the potential consequences of this trend?
The U.S. Treasury debt market has experienced its worst long-run returns in history, with an investment banker describing the bonds as "trading like a meme stock." The article notes that if Treasuries become uninvestable, it calls into question Washington's capacity to live beyond its means through debt issuance and may cause foreigners to diversify away from the global dollar system into assets like gold.

UK Special Coverage Is Kemi Badenoch Reviving Tory Class War? The Conservative leader pledged to eliminate inheritance taxes on family estates. UK Special Coverage (Gary Roberts/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images) Last week, Britain’s Prime Minister Andy Burnham, in his speech to the Labour conference in Liverpool, turned the political clock back to the 1970s, complete with nationalization, big social spending, and attacks on landlords. The Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, at her own party’s conference Wednesday, went even further back—to the Second World War, after which many stately homes and expensive houses had to be sold to pay death duties, helping to kill the Downton lifestyle. Badenoch promised that if the Tories come…Open
What other policy positions did Kemi Badenoch outline in her speech to appeal to middle-class British voters?
Beyond the inheritance tax proposal, Badenoch outlined several other measures intended to appeal to middle-class voters, including cutting the benefits bill, cancelling net zero, building new prisons, halting illegal immigration, and building British defences. She also sought to distance the Conservative party from ethnonationalism by rejecting the rhetoric of rivals like Reform UK.

How does Kemi Badenoch's inheritance tax proposal compare to international standards in countries like the U.S., Canada, Australia, Sweden, and Norway?
The article notes that inheritance tax appears to be going out of fashion globally. It has been abolished in Canada, Australia, and even social-democratic Sweden and Norway (though Norway retains a version of a wealth tax). In the United States, the federal estate tax has an exemption of $15 million for individuals and $30 million for couples, which is 23 times the UK’s current exemption.
Q&A ID e3007919-d7d0-4332-af0c-bbe19be2959c
What arguments are provided in favor of abolishing or reducing inheritance tax to encourage economic growth?
Arguments for reducing inheritance tax include the idea that it discourages saving and investment. It can force family businesses and farms to sell assets just to pay the tax, which discourages entrepreneurship and causes the goodwill and commitment of family firms to be lost to society. Additionally, the British tax regime is viewed by some as a disincentive for wealthy individuals and entrepreneurs to remain in the UK; for example, some billionaires have left the country citing inheritance-tax risks.

What are the potential fiscal impacts of Kemi Badenoch's proposal to exempt family homes from inheritance tax?
The proposal would significantly reduce the revenue the UK Exchequer receives from inheritance tax, which is currently scheduled to yield around £15 billion by 2030. Critics, including the Labour Party and the Trades Union Congress, have pointed out that this move creates a "black hole" in the budget and undermines Badenoch's promise to cut borrowing and pay down the national debt.

THEAMERICANCONSERVATIVE (Jason Killmeyer) - How to Solve the ICE Manpower Problem
Don’t listen to pro-amnesty Republicans. The post How to Solve the ICE Manpower Problem appeared first on The American Conservative .
Immigration How to Solve the ICE Manpower Problem Don’t listen to pro-amnesty Republicans. Photo by Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images The mainstream media over the past few months have participated in a messaging onslaught that, if measured as paid advertising, would likely be as costly as a presidential campaign. The media blitz has one message: to convince people deportations are not doable. This message is repeated by what I call the “Republican Amnesty caucus,” led by Rep. Maria Salazar of Florida, Rep. Bacon of Nebraska, and Rep. Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania. They insist our economy requires near-slave labor and that what the people voted for in 2024—the deportation of millions of illegal aliens—is too unwieldy, too rough, and…Open
What logistical locations and methods does the author suggest for holding and processing illegal aliens at scale?
The author suggests using military bases as staging areas, similar to how the Biden administration conducted Operation Allies Welcome. The article also mentions using federal lands and airfields for holding thousands of illegal aliens, specifically citing the use of up to 2,000 illegal aliens at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn by the Biden administration as a precedent for what is possible.
Q&A ID 1f36b3c0-9d8d-4e78-85c7-f5b50c5d50b7
What funding source does the author suggest is available to pay the workers in the proposed Immigration Corps?
The author states that funds are available because Congress passed the "Big Beautiful Bill" following the 2024 election mandate earned by Donald Trump. The author claims that signing this bill effectively provided a "historic check" for the detention and deportation of illegal aliens, and that these available or reobligated sums could be used to pay the Corps members enough to offset their risk and opportunity costs.

How does the author characterize the arguments made by "pro-amnesty Republicans" regarding the feasibility of deporting millions of illegal aliens?
The author describes the "Republican Amnesty caucus," led by Representatives Maria Salazar, Bacon, and Thompson, as claiming that the economy requires "near-slave labor" and that the deportation of millions of illegal aliens is too unwieldy, too rough, and something the American people would not support. The author dismisses these claims as a "diagnosis" that ignores the fact that large-scale movement of people across the country is possible, citing the Biden administration's use of military bases and federal lands for similar large-scale operations.

According to the article, what specific federal authorities could be used to quickly staff the proposed Immigration Corps?
The author points to Section 3161 of Title 5, which provides a staffing framework for temporary federal organizations and allows for appointments outside the competitive civil service. The article notes that this was the authority used to stand up the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Additionally, the author mentions that the government has authorities to waive certain onboarding requirements and make direct appointments at speed.
