YOUTUBE (LiveNOW from FOX) - Cornell rape case: Lawmakers renew efforts to close ‘voluntary intoxication loophole’
We are learning more this weekend after Cornell's president addressed the growing controversy surrounding the university's response to the alleged 2024 gang rape of a student in a campus fraternity house, calling the case "deeply disturbing." According to our partners at FOX 5 New York, President Michael Kotlikoff also pledged transparency, change, and a "serious look" at campus and fraternity culture. LiveNOW’s Shawna Khalafi is speaking with Maria Cramer with The New York Times to learn more about what critics describe as the "voluntary intoxication loophole," a provision in New York law that can make it more difficult to prosecute certain sexual assault cases involving voluntarily intoxicated victims. "My heart aches when I think of what she experienced," Kotlikoff said of the victim in his statement. "It raises heartbreaking and troubling issues about sexual assault, dehumanization, and aspects of party culture, alcohol, and drug use. It also raises questions around the investigations conducted after the allegations were reported."
