Tom Cruise's prestige drama Digger took just £15 million globally on opening weekend, one of his weakest debuts as his split from Ana de Armas became public. The Sun reported that Digger grossed £15 million worldwide in its opening weekend, a result industry experts fear could leave the film down as much as £100 million once costs are tallied. The movie carried a £125 million production budget and an estimated £75 million in marketing. It earned a C+ CinemaScore, the audience grade moviegoers give a film after early screenings, and drew sharply divided reviews. For a star who rebuilt his brand on massive crowd-pleasers, the debut ranks among the weakest of his career and his lowest box-office opening in nearly 20 years. Audiences passed on the serious turn Digger cast Cruise, 64, as a balding, pot-bellied Texan oil tycoon. Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the director behind Birdman and The Revenant, steered the project. The film was framed as a creative swing past the action-hero mold, a bid to be taken seriously. Ticket buyers appear to want the familiar Cruise instead. Warner Bros. answered soft tracking with “decide for yourself” ads before release. Cruise still pushed hard: a New Heights podcast stop with Travis and Jason Kelce, a dance through the spirit tunnel on The Jennifer Hudson Show, and a topless GQ cover, his first magazine cover story in two decades. He brought the Prince and Princess of Wales to the London premiere at the end of last month and met the cast with them. Awards buzz has since faded. Defending the movie to a screening audience after mixed reviews, Cruise said: "OK, the door’s open. Now I want to push it again." He added: "This film is handmade. People want to see real things." Not every viewer agreed. One unnamed fan put it bluntly: "Tom Cruise’s Digger is a disaster, I couldn’t wait for it to be over." In GQ he struck a broader note: “Life, I’m coming right at it. It’s coming at me and I’m coming right at it.” Romance with Ana de Armas ended after months The box-office bruise landed on top of a personal reset. Cruise was first linked to actress Ana de Armas in February 2025. They went public that spring, including hand-in-hand photos in Vermont, and she attended David Beckham’s 50th birthday party with him in May 2025. Later came a private-jet hop to Madrid and a helicopter trip into London for her 37th birthday. The relationship lasted less than nine months. The Sun’s exclusive on the split came last October. A source close to the couple described a clean break: "Tom and Ana had a good time together but their time as a couple has run its course. They are going to remain good friends but they aren’t dating any more. The spark had gone between them but they still love each other’s company and they’ve both been really adult about it." De Armas was briefly pictured with venture capitalist Marcelo Valente in Los Angeles, then linked to Venezuelan musician Beto Montenegro, dancing in Madrid and kissing on a Formentera getaway. A source called that match exclusive and “pretty magical.” She was seen this week at a private Louis Vuitton party in Paris with Emma Stone and Chloe Grace Moretz. Suri drops the Cruise name Family distance added another public note. In July, Cruise’s daughter Suri, 20, registered to vote in Pennsylvania as Suri Noelle, dropping the Cruise surname and using the middle name tied to her mother, Katie Holmes. Suri was born in April 2006. Her parents married about six months later and divorced in 2012 over irreconcilable differences. Their last public appearance together came that same year; insiders have claimed no private contact for more than a decade. Holmes has since been linked to artist Jason Bard Yarmosky. Sequels wait while one project stalls Cruise’s calendar still points back to proven franchises. A Days of Thunder sequel with Anne Hathaway is lined up, along with Top Gun 3. A joint project titled Deeper has been put on hold over budget issues. His last major disappointment before the later resurgence was 2017’s The Mummy. Digger’s opening now sits in that thin company: huge spend, muted demand, and a star arguing for art while audiences stayed home. Hollywood can chase trophies and reinvention all it wants. The people who buy tickets still settle the bill. The post Tom Cruise's Digger posts weakest opening in nearly 20 years after Ana de Armas split appeared first on American Almanac .
