A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Peru's Andes region Saturday night, killing at least five people and forcing hundreds from their homes, with traditional adobe construction blamed for worsening the destruction. The quake hit approximately one mile from Sicaya in central Peru at roughly 9:20 p.m., according to U.S. Geological Survey data, at a shallow depth of about 6.2 miles. Shaking was felt as far away as Lima, Peru's capital. Within hours, local officials confirmed multiple deaths, dozens of injuries, and widespread structural damage in a region where many buildings are made of sun-dried mud brick.
