An armed poacher was trampled to death by elephants while lining up a shot at a white rhino inside South Africa's Kruger National Park, and rangers say the animals may have been protecting the herd. Two men entered the park illegally through the remote Pafuri area, carrying a high-powered rifle and an axe, intent on killing a white rhino for its horn. They never got the chance. A herd of elephants charged the pair before they could fire, and the man closest to pulling the trigger did not survive the encounter, the Daily Mail reported . His accomplice escaped, fled roughly four miles back to the Pafuri Ranger Lodge, and alerted authorities.
