Kennedy Jr. decertified a Kentucky-based organ procurement nonprofit after federal reviewers found serious deficiencies in nearly a third of cases examined, including patients who were still alive when staff tried to harvest their organs. Kennedy announced the decision Wednesday in Lexington, Kentucky, making Network for Hope the first of roughly 55 federally contracted organ procurement organizations ever shut down by the government.
