North Carolina's Democratic Senate nominee Roy Cooper appointed a former Bloods gang member convicted of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder to a state task force on racial equity in criminal justice, a record his Republican opponent is now using against him. Cooper created the Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice by executive order in June 2020, weeks after the death of George Floyd. Among the members he chose was Kerwin Pittman, who had been convicted in 2007 for his role in a drive-by shooting in Raleigh that killed 19-year-old Jamel Amiens Jeffreys.
