Newly released air traffic control recordings reveal the chilling seconds between a routine takeoff clearance at Chandler Municipal Airport and the moment a fellow pilot radioed the tower to report the plane had gone down, killing the sole person on board. The Piper PA-28-180 Cherokee departed runway 22 right on a Tuesday evening just after 9:30 p.m. local time. Moments later, the aircraft slammed into a commercial yard southwest of the airport in Chandler, Arizona, and the pilot, the only occupant, did not survive. A small aircraft went down near Chandler Airport in Arizona Tuesday evening, killing the sole person on board, and authorities have yet to identify the pilot or explain what caused the crash. Chandler Fire Department crews responded to a 911 call reporting a downed aircraft near McQueen and Queen Creek roads, just outside the airport in the Phoenix suburb. ABC News reported that responders worked with the Chandler Airport control tower to pinpoint the crash site, where they found a single aircraft with one occupant who had died.
