Oprah Winfrey announced she will close her flagship Leadership Academy for Girls near Johannesburg at the end of next year, handing the 52-acre campus back to the South African provincial government under what the academy calls a longstanding agreement. Winfrey's statement, issued Wednesday by the academy, framed the closure not as a retreat but as a planned transition. The campus, with its 21 classrooms, six science and computer laboratories, 10,000-volume library, and 600-seat theater, will pass to the Gauteng provincial education department.
