Oprah Winfrey announced that her flagship Leadership Academy for Girls south of Johannesburg will close at the end of 2027 and hand control to the local government, but offered no explanation for why she is walking away from a project she once called her life's mission. Winfrey, 72, issued a statement to the Daily Mail confirming the closure. The school will graduate two more classes before it shuts down. After that, the Gauteng Department of Education, the provincial authority that originally partnered with Winfrey to build the campus, will take over the site.
