The structures sit roughly 1,800 miles below the planet's surface, in one of the most extreme and least understood environments on Earth. Temperatures at the mantle-core boundary swing by about 1,000°C, nearly 1,800°F, across a relatively thin transition zone where solid, slow-moving rock meets liquid metal.
