CENTERFORSECURITYPOLICY (Tommy Waller) - Center for Security Policy develops “S.A.V.E. Transformers Act” to help states assess critical vulnerabilities in their electric grids

Originally posted by Save the Grid

At the request of state lawmakers seeking to protect their state’s electric grid, and in conjunction with a unanimous and bipartisan Resolution adopted by the National Conference of State Legislators in summer 2025, the Center for Security Policy and its Secure the Grid Coalition developed the “S.A.V.E. Transformers Act.” This is an act “requiring utilities and electric grid operators to assess and report the vulnerability of high-voltage transformers to geomagnetic and electromagnetic disturbances, and to recommend mitigation measures to protect the state electric infrastructure.” The bill language was developed utilizing analysis from a groundbreaking report published by the Center in November 2025 . CENTERFORSECURITYPOLICY (Tommy Waller, Douglas Ellsworth and Michael Mabee) - How utility silence opens door for GIC protection

Originally published by The National Interest

With no industry pushback, regulators have a clear path to incentivize the deployment of proven technologies that can mitigate billions in annual losses and strengthen grid resilience. In our previous article, “How to Prevent the Inevitable Collapse of the US Power Grid,” we warned of the very real risks to America’s electric grid from Ground-Induced Currents (GICs) and outlined a formal complaint we filed with the grid’s federal regulator—the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC )—urging protection against this very real threat. We also highlighted the roughly $10 billion in annual economic losses from GIC-induced harmonics from routine, low-level solar storms and the availability of a proven, low-cost GIC-blocking…Open
