Ten research teams picked up Ig Nobel Prizes on Thursday at a convention center in Zurich for studies ranging from cockroach milk to the science of blowing your nose. The awards, handed out every year since 1991 by the magazine Annals of Improbable Research, honor genuine scientific work that "makes you laugh, then makes you think." Harvard Medical School agreed to a $53 million settlement with families of body donors whose remains were stolen and sold on the black market by the school's own morgue manager, a scheme that included selling human skin to be tanned into leather. Cedric Lodge, the former morgue manager at Harvard Medical School, ran what federal prosecutors described as a years-long operation: removing brains, skin, hands, and faces from cadavers donated for medical research and shipping them to buyers in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.
