Lonnie Bunch will leave the Smithsonian at year’s end after sustained White House scrutiny over how the institution presents American history to the public. Bunch, the Smithsonian Institution’s secretary since 2019, announced his departure with “very mixed emotions and heartfelt gratitude,” The Associated Press reported . The Smithsonian said he will leave at the end of 2026. His retirement follows a widening dispute between President Donald Trump’s administration and Smithsonian leaders over museum exhibits, educational materials and the telling of American history.
