A remote Siberian town has lost six residents to brown bear attacks in roughly a month, and Russian investigators say local officials failed to control a predator population that has more than doubled since 1990. The deaths center on Podtyosovo, a small town in Russia's Krasnoyarsk region, where bears have killed elderly foragers, a factory worker, and a mother of eight, the last dragged from her own home. A separate attack in the Altai Mountains killed a 29-year-old woman hours after her fiancé proposed to her. Across Russia, fourteen people have died in bear attacks this year, and authorities have killed more than 530 bears deemed aggressive since spring.
