Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration is retreating from a proposed identification system for New York City's new taxpayer-subsidized grocery stores, after critics pointed out the mayor opposes ID requirements for voting. The reversal came days after Jeanny Pak, head of the city's Economic Development Corporation, told reporters at a July 27 news conference that the administration was exploring a "library card-esque" system to "target New Yorkers" and "manage who's buying" at five planned city-run stores. An independent cost study pegs Mayor Zohran Mamdani's flagship universal childcare plan at roughly $9 billion a year, about 50 percent above the $6 billion figure he sold voters on the campaign trail. The Center for New York City Affairs, a nonpartisan research group affiliated with the New School, released a report estimating that New York City would need between $8.7 billion and $9.3 billion annually to deliver the free childcare program Mamdani made the centerpiece of his mayoral bid.
