Archaeologists working at an ancient adobe pyramid in Lima, Peru, have unveiled the skeletal remains of a man they believe was sacrificed roughly 1,400 years ago during a ceremonial ritual, a discovery that opens a new window into a civilization that vanished centuries before the Inca Empire rose. The team, led by archaeologist Gladys Paz, found the adult skeleton buried inside a canal near the base of Huaca Pucllana, a massive stepped pyramid that straddles Lima's upscale Miraflores and San Isidro districts. The body was resting on its left flank, its skull positioned to face both the pyramid and the Pacific Ocean. A family outing at Boulder Beach turned grim on Sunday when Mario Lecano waded in after his daughter and spotted what he first mistook for animal bones near her legs. Lecano, walking the Lake Mead shoreline with friend Dianelis Molina Cruz, had been tossing rocks in the shallows when he pulled up a jawbone, complete with teeth and what appeared to be dental fillings.
