Hope Schiefer was 13 when someone at her church pointed out a lump on her face during a class. She thought it was a cyst or a stubborn pimple and tried to squeeze it. Nothing happened. A doctor's visit led to a referral to a vascular surgeon, who told her the growth was a hemangioma, a mass of blood vessels growing and bunching together abnormally, attached to a major vein in her face.
