A 24-year-old surfer punched and kicked a charging tiger shark until it retreated at a popular Hawaii surf spot, then walked away with little more than a broken board and scraped-up legs. Albert Westpfal was paddling over a reef at China Walls, a well-known break on Oahu's South Shore, on Tuesday afternoon when a tiger shark estimated at 12 feet clamped down on the tail of his surfboard. The shark bit clean through the fiberglass, knocked Westpfal off the board, and sent him into the open ocean, then turned and charged him a second time. Westpfal fought back. One and three quarter miles. That is how far an off-duty firefighter ran on September 11 to get to the towers. Stephen Siller had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when the first plane hit. He drove back for his gear, found the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel closed, strapped 60 pounds to his back, and ran through it. He was last seen at West and Liberty Streets, at the base of the South Tower. Twelve members of Squad 1 died that day. His remains were never found. Stephen Siller is an American hero.

A 15-year-old boy who had been fishing with his brother and cousin in Alaska was rescued on Monday after their boat capsized the night before. The three boys were on an 18-foot fishing vessel near St. Lawrence Island when their boat overturned, according to a news release from the US Coast Guard.
