AXIOS (Neil Irwin) - The U.S. inflation problem is getting worse

Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics; Chart: Neil Irwin/Axios America's inflation problem is getting worse, not better, as 2026 progresses. New wholesale price data — on the heels of Tuesday's consumer price report — confirm it. Why it matters: The evidence of continued price pressures stretches far beyond the energy price spike that occurred following the Iran war, and suggests ongoing pressures across a range of goods and services. - It is getting harder and harder to chalk up the inflationary impulse evident in a wide range of data solely to the one-time effects of tariffs and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. - That makes the chance of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut at any point this year increasingly remote, barring a…

State of the Union: Unemployment continues to creep up in 2026. The post U.S. Lost 92,000 Jobs in Dramatic February Underperformance appeared first on The American Conservative .

U.S. employers cut 92,000 jobs in February, far worse than economists’ expectations of a 50,000-job gain, while the unemployment rate edged up to 4.4 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said in their latest report Friday.  The report also revised January payroll growth down to 126,000 from 130,000 and December to a loss of 17,000 from a previously reported gain of 50,000. The revisions make 2025 the first year with five months of net job loss since 2010. Health care payrolls fell, largely because a Kaiser Permanente strike temporarily sidelined 31,000 workers, while technology, federal government, transportation and warehousing also weakened. In addition, labor-force participation decreased, suggesting that some workers are…Open
