The National Hurricane Center expanded Tropical Storm Watches and issued a new Storm Surge Watch across the northern Gulf Coast on Monday as Tropical Depression Two, likely the second named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, crept toward land with the potential for life-threatening flooding. The depression formed Sunday in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and sat roughly 100 miles south of the eastern Florida Panhandle by Monday morning, packing maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. That puts it just 4 mph short of the 39 mph threshold for tropical storm classification. The NHC expects the system to cross that line later Monday and take the name Bertha. A Michigan man who called Alaska authorities to confess to a decades-old killing has been charged with the murder he reported, after investigators traced the anonymous tip back to him and found the victim's remains in a barrel off a remote highway. Christopher Popps, 54, was arrested near Kalamazoo, Michigan, on July 16 after a Fairbanks grand jury indicted him on two counts of second-degree murder in the 1993 death of Patrick Orville Dearth, a former co-worker who vanished from Fairbanks more than 30 years ago. Michigan State Police took Popps into custody, and he remains jailed in Kalamazoo County awaiting extradition to Alaska. The case sat cold for three decades.
